Almonds - nut or kernel?
In a world where peanuts are legumes and tomatoes are fruits, it's no longer surprising that almonds aren't officially nuts, they're kernels. The almond tree (Prunus dulcis) belongs to the rose family, but in botany the almonds are assigned to the drupes. And guess how many years the almonds have been cultivated? Yes for 4,000 years, crazy right? The almond has its origins in the eastern Mediterranean. Today they are mainly grown in America, southern and western Europe - mostly in California, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Chile.
Recipes with blanched almonds
Blanched almonds are a popular ingredient in mueslis and granolas. The day can only start well with the protein and fibre source: full and satisfied. But not only mueslis enjoy the crunchy core - our blanched almonds are also excellent in pastries and other sweet dishes: from energy balls, coconut balls to vegan raspberry cheese cake – the almond kernels enchant all kinds of desserts. In the blanched form, the mildly sweet taste is even more intense, so that they form the perfect basis for further processing in almond butter, drink, flour or similar. And don't forget: The blanched almond kernels also taste delicious as a pure snack between meals.
Buy blanched almonds
After harvesting, the almonds are broken up by rollers and then sorted according to size. The brown almonds keep the outer skin, the white almonds are blanched. The latter unfold their pure almond taste through the molting process and thus seduce your taste buds, great KoRo word of honour. What are you waiting for? Buy our blanched almonds now and have fun with the 1 kg value pack.

Climate impact
At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.
CO₂ emissions by product
To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison
Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.
Comparison of CO₂ emissions per product in kg
Disclaimer: Different methods (comparison products) - The CO2 emissions of the non-KoRo products come from a different data source. Therefore, there may be differences between their evaluation method and the evaluation of KoRo products.
Phytochemicals
The English language has once again come up with some gems: phytochemicals, phytonutrients, or plant metabolites. Probably an absolutely accurate description in biological terms, but what does that tell us? We shed some light on the subject and explain the group of phytochemicals in more detail.

These almonds are the largest almonds available on the market
Global almond production is by California, with over 2/3 of global production; buy why? This is probably due to a combination of large cultivation areas, easy mechanical harvest, and comparably low wages. Also, unlike many other parts of the world, water is not a scarce commodity in California. After the USA as the front runner in almond production, we find Spain, Morocco, Iran and Turkey. A total of around 2.2 million tons of almonds are harvested worldwide every year!
