The Brazil nut is also called the "Para nut" because it was originally exported to Europe from the Brazilian state of Pará. Rest assured, the beloved nuts have nothing paranormal about them. The only unusual aspect is how incredibly tasty they are! The seeds of the Brazil nut tree are delicious in cakesbreadenergy balls, muesli as well as porridge and are equally tasty in savoury dishes, for example, they can make a fine sauce for pasta! Take your taste buds to Brazil and order a 1 kg value pack of Brazil nuts now!

The history of the Brazil nut

The Brazil nut comes, as the name indicates, primarily from Brazil. It grows in the Amazon rainforest and is one of the oldest trees that grows in the region. Beginning in the 17th century, it was brought to Europe.

Brazil nuts: growth and harvest

The Brazil nut bears capsule fruits similar to coconuts which fall to the ground once ripe. Now you can do the maths: each capsule contains about 20 Brazil nuts and each tree forms around 400 capsules per season, so how many Brazil nuts per tree do we get? Correct! Around 8000 nuts per tree! Although the Brazil nut was for a long time grown mainly in Brazil, Bolivia has also become a big producer.

Climate impact

At KoRo, we analyse the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the production of our snacks. These include, among other things, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. Our hard-working sustainability team collects all the information to calculate a value: the so-called CO2 equivalents. We are now passing this information on to you so that you can make informed purchasing decisions and keep an eye on your personal carbon footprint. We also use these valuable findings ourselves, to try to make our supply chains even smarter in the future and monitor our CO2 footprint.

CO₂ emissions by product

To make the work of our sustainability team easier, we have teamed up with the company Cozero. They support us with their decarbonisation software to calculate the CO2 emissions of our products. Our products go through a lot before they make their way into your pantry or snack bowl, so there is a lot to take into consideration: production, packaging, and logistics – to name just the big steps.

CO₂ emission per product in comparison

Would you like to find out how well your favourite snack stacks up against other products in terms of carbon footprint? Say no more! To create comparability, we calculated the CO₂ emissions per 1 kg of our products and compared them with other products that end up on many people's plates every day, such as cheese, tofu, and many more. We also included coffee as a drink for comparison. So no matter if it is your favourite snack or your go-to kitchen product, you are now able to see exactly how it performs in our “CO₂ per kg of product” ranking.

Comparison of CO₂ emissions per product in kg

Disclaimer: Different methods (comparison products) - The CO2 emissions of the non-KoRo products come from a different data source. Therefore, there may be differences between their evaluation method and the evaluation of KoRo products.

Large

Large - The size classification of Brazil nuts is calculated from the number of nuts per pound. The less nuts per pound, the larger the nuts are. In the largest class Large, 80 to 110 Brazil nuts per pound are counted.

The Paranut, also often called "Brazilian nut", is native to the tropical rainforests of South America. There are only four countries in total that are dedicated to a larger production of Brazil nuts: Brazil, Bolivia, Ivory Coast and Peru. In 2017, 84,089 tons of Brazil nut kernels were harvested worldwide. In the previous ten years, the world harvest had been between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes each.

Very good product that I recommend.

I was amazed by the quality and freshness of these nuts, and I'm completely satisfied with them. The value for money is also good. I eat two a day, which is the recommended dose to enjoy the benefits of selenium.
