Coconut water is obtained from young coconuts that are harvested before they are actually ripe. Depending on the degree of ripeness, a coconut can contain up to half a liter of juice. The younger the nut, the more liquid it still contains. Coconut water tastes best when it is pleasantly sweet and yet refreshing.
Pure and unadulterated
For connoisseurs, nothing beats coconut water in iced form without any other ingredients - preferably fresh and straight from the coconut shell. As you have to dig deeper into your wallet for fresh coconuts in Germany, you can also opt for the bottled version, e.g. coconut water from a can or Tetra Pak.
Tip:
If you forget to put your coconut water in the fridge before drinking it, you can also help yourself with a few ice cubes. If you don't want water ice cubes to water down your coconut water, you can put the coconut water in an ice cube tray and freeze it.
Fruit in coconut water
Recipes using pineapple, orange, lemon or lime are particularly popular in combination with coconut water. Although these each have a strong taste of their own, they are still weak enough in small quantities not to drown out the taste of the coconut water. Nevertheless, you can get creative with the drink mix using any fruit. Whole berries look particularly pretty in a glass.
Herbs and flowers in coconut water
Fresh mint leaves seem to go with almost everything. The green leaves also look great in your coconut water. But you can also use lemon balm, rosemary, thyme or even sage, for example. Incidentally, cool drinks with basil are particularly trendy at the moment - this also goes well with your coconut drink.
You can also use flowers to spice up the look and/or taste of your coconut water, e.g. rose petals, violets, pansies or lavender.
Fresh herbs and flowers also look really good in a glass with a few ice cubes.
Spices in coconut water
The world of spices is huge! For your coconut water, we recommend that you don't completely cover up the taste with spices, but rather emphasize it. This works best if you only stir in small quantities. Ginger powder or cinnamon, for example, go particularly well with it. You can also try nutmeg and pepper or - if you're brave - use a little chili. Depending on how well stocked your spice rack is, you are sure to find something to try out some unusual creations.
Smoothies with coconut water

Coconut water in alcoholic drinks
The refreshing juice of the coconut has also found its way into the world of cocktails and long drinks. It is mainly used to mix gin, rum and vodka. Coconut water can ensure that the taste of the alcohol is softened somewhat and adds freshness and sweetness to the drink. You can also play around with fruits, herbs and spices here too. Right on trend: drinks with coconut water and matcha
Refreshing and energizing drinks with matcha and coconut water are all the rage. Here is one of many ideas for you:
½ to 1 tsp matcha powder, small amount of 80 degree water, a little coconut blossom sugar if you like, 200 ml coconut water, a few ice cubes and shredded coconut (as decoration). Start by stirring your matcha powder with a little hot water until the consistency is porridge-like. Leave the mixture to cool before pouring in the coconut water, adding some coconut blossom sugar and stirring well. Now fill a glass with a few ice cubes and add the matcha and coconut water mixture. Now you can decorate your drink with grated coconut - done!
