Where do mung beans come from? Origin and name
The mung bean originally comes from India and is one of the first cultivated plants of the area. Nowadays, there are over 200 different types of mung beans. Also know as green gram, Lunja beans, or Jerusalem beans, these little green beans have many different names; their sprouts are very similar to those of soybean and are therefore often confused and even incorrectly labelled. Soybeans and mung beans are fundamentally different and the mung bean seedlings have nothing to do with soybeans. Can't get enough o beans? We have various other types of beans in our assortment: Pinto beans, azuki beans, white beans and the all time classic kidneys beans.
Germinate mung beans
In fact, the beans are very suitable for sprouting and it is really not witchcraft. The mung beans should be soaked in water overnight for about 12 hours. Since the beans draw a lot of water, you should use at least 5 to 7 times the amount of water. Afterwards, the sprouts need to be watered two to three times a day - make sure that you store the jar at room temperature. Mung sprouts are very productive: one cup of seeds yields about 7 cups of sprouts. You can harvest the mung bean sprouts after the third day - after that the small sprouts turn pale purple and become very tart in taste.
Use mung beans and mung sprouts
Before eating, you should cook the mung beans - and soak them in water the night before. If necessary, you can also do it early in the morning - as long as it is at least 4 hours. Sounds complicated? But it is not! After that, it's really easy peasy: You put a pot of water on, lovingly throw the beans in and wait about 30 minutes. Now your mung beans are ready to eat and ready for any of your favourite dishes. For example the cooked mung beans are also a real taste sensation in a salad. And the mung sprouts are a perfect match for Asian cuisine - not only decorative, they are also unbeatable in your wok. But if soaking these beans sounds a little too time consuming we also have practically tinned beans in our assortment. Now it's up to you how you use your mung beans! Buy our organic mung beans now, sprout them, eat them - go wild!
